Kids Want to Have Healthy Relationships
For the Betweentime TV show we surveyed over 100 middle schoolers. It was interesting that one of the main topics they were most interested in, is how to have healthy relationships. I’m not sure if this would have been true 20 years ago, but it’s true now. People of all ages in our culture are struggling in their most important relationships. Often times people that were once close, don’t even speak to each other anymore! Kids see this and it makes them feel unsafe. Kids know that a healthy family, a good marriage, and close friendships are super important in life!
They want good friendships and to be able to get along with people that believe differently than they do. So as parents, even though we don’t have all the answers, we can learn alongside of them. With the Lord’s help and principles from the Word of God, we are learning how to have better relationships also. And to the degree that we have success in relationships, we should purposefully teach our kids those principles. As parents really, we are their first example of a close relationship and friendship values. So, our relationship with them is a key training ground regarding how to relate to others in their lives. This is why it is so important that we model selflessness, working things out, listening, forgiving…
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, our world is messed up. Please teach us your ways and help us to teach our kids, so they can prosper in every way, but especially relationally. Lord, we pray that our kids would have great friendships and you would guide them to those good friends and bless them. And I pray that you would protect my relationship with my son(s)/daughter(s). That they would always know they’re safe with me, that I’m their biggest advocate, and that like you, I am there for them and will never give up on them.”
Scripture: Dedicate your children to God and point them in the way that they should go, and the values they’ve learned from you will be with them for life. Proverbs 22:6 TPT
